Gulf Coast Records !

Dan Seal and String Band Acc.
Gulf Coast Records # 1012 - 1954
Side A - Don't Break My Heart
Side B - You Gotta Walk That Line

Dan Seal and his string band really cook up a storm on the B side of this rare little platter out of Biloxi, Mississippi in 1954.
This was the first label set up and owned by Marion Carpenter and Pee Wee Maddux before they set up the 'Fine' label in the same area a short time after with Dan seeing releases on both.
The A side is a real nice slowish country chugger with some real nice vocals by Dan.
'You Gotta Walk That Line' is pretty damn cool little tune and packs a real punch, starts with that typical Hank Williams intro but added with some superb vocals and chugging rhythm guitar, fiddle and Steel and then we get some fine picking on the ol' lead lead guitar ......wow! just a doozy of a record!

Radio Artist Records !

Turner Bros (Red & Lige) - Radio Artist Records # 204 - May 1947
Side A - All Night Long
Side B - Could you Take Me Back.

Red & Lige hit the ground running with the brilliant 'All Night Long', fantastic bluegrass and hillbilly bop with the expected great fiddle, steel and humorous dual vocals. The flip is the usual slower number but both are a look into the changing styles in country and Bluegrass around this time and this disc shows that Hank Williams had started to gather interest around this time.

Turner Bros. (Red & Lige)
Radio Artist Records # 234 - 1948
Side A - The Fallen Tree Waltz

Mid 1948 E. T. Herzog Recording Studio, 811 Race St., Cincinnati, OH - Turner Brothers (Red & Lige) (Ulysses Red Turner [vcl], Monroe Lige Turner [vcl] + Roy Lanham - Lead Guitar + Unknown Steel & Bass!

If you want Hillbilly Boogie in your life then your search is over folks! what we have here is Hillbilly Boogie perfection with the Turner Bros on dual vocals and rhythm guitar and Roy Lanham on Lead guitar for what can only be described as a "Scorcher"
This could have been recorded in 1952 and you wouldn't argue with it but the fact is it was recorded in mid 1948!!! ....damn fine!!!!.......Roy is hot hot hot on that 6 string for 1948 !!!!!
Radio Artist records always bought your radio friends to records and thank god they did !!!

Khoury's Records !

Lawrence Walker with his Wandering Aces
Khoury's Recordings - K624 - 1952
Side A - Keep Your Hand Off It
Side B - Madame Sostan

Lawrence Walker was a very renowned Cajun music Accordion player and had a stack of releases on Khoury through 1951 into 1952 .
This little beauty kicks of with accordion and you think it's just a run of the mill Cajun waltz but then Bam! here comes some delightful hillbilly and boy oh boy it does the job! well it was enough for me to shell out a few bucks on it (unlisted on discogs or 45 rpm) 'Keep Your Hand Off It' just goes for it and is a damn fine ditty, comedy saucy lyrics and top notch sound all the way, rip roaring lead guitar and fiddle! wow!
The B side is sung in French and is a very old Cajun song from the early 30's and is basically about a fella who is going to steal the young love of his life from the family by climbing through their window at night! who said 78's are bland and boring!

...........................................................................................................

Rick Johnson - Khoury's Recordings - KH-644 - 1954
Side A - It Isn't Right.
Side B - Gotta Get Back.

Rick Johnson AKA Gordon Ritter wrote and sung both sides of this top little record on the Khoury label from Lake Charles, Louisiana. Bayou hits was a bold statement but here we have a cool slice of country.
Both sides just ooze quality and Ricks voice is strong and pleasant but it also has an edge which at times sounds really cool. Plenty of steel, Piano and fiddle makes this a lovely B side and "Gotta Get Back" is the tune that swings for sure!

Quality Records !

Quality Records (Canada)

Ernie Chaffin - Quality Records # 1659 - 1957
Side A - I'm Lonesome
Side B - Laughin' and Jokin'

Originally released on the legendary Sun records from Memphis in the same year and picked up for a release on the Canadian label Quality.
This is a rare find on a 78 by Quality (only listed as a release on Quality as a 45 rpm on Discogs) and in my opinion one of the greatest recordings made at Sun studios .......better than any Jerry Lee Lewis recording .......so is a mystery why Sam released 4 singles by Ernie but he never pushed him like he did with all the others.
Anyway, this is a quality record released on a Quality label. Pure country bop, original sound, original production and just brilliant IMO.

Harris Records !

Harris Records!

Danny Brown and the Circle "O" Ranchboys
Side A - Party Girl.
Side B - You're Gonna Be Fooled.
Mt. Pleasant, Texas.

A mighty fine record by Danny Brown and his Circle "O" Ranchboys out of Mount Pleasant, Texas (date unknown) but sounds around 52/53.
Both songs bounce along at a fine mid tempo pace, classic country Hillbilly, piano, guitar, steel guitar and fiddle provide all the usual and mostly expected sounds and all played to a very high level.

Academy Records !

Orville 'Rusty' Newby and his Saddle Serenaders
Academy Record # WS 100 - July 1950 - Fresno, CA
Side A - Ghost-Town Boogie.
Side B - I Can't See The Sun For The Tears.

This ghostly horror hillbilly lament was recorded in Fresno, CA in 1950 and by jingo it's a horror smash. Ghost-Town Boogie is just incredible, a haunting ghostly steel weeps along with scary lead guitar and vocals that would scare a tumblweed back up a tree. Additional vocals by Ray Cook . Killer Hillbilly Diller!!!!!

Orville 'Rusty' Newby and his Saddle Serenaders
Academy Record # 100 - 1950 - Fresno, CA.
Side A - I Can't See The Sun For The Tears.
Side B - I'll Understand My Dear.

Here is another Academy record by Orville with the exact same label number # 100! (No WS Prefix) But I just cannot be sure which version was released first! Both these records have the same song listed on both versions! 'I Can't See The Sun For The Tears' on the A Side here but on the B side of the 'Ghost Town Boogie' release!

To be honest! the A Side here is a pretty bang average country tune! nothing special! so leads me to think they loved the song and when 'Ghost Town Boogie' was recorded they knew that was the better song and re-released the same version of 'I Can't See The Sun For Tears' on the B side!

Sho-Me Records!

Milt Dickey with String Band
Sho-Me Records - 528 - Oct 1952
Side B - Neon Love
Side A - Our Wedding Will Always Be Brand New.

Milt gives us a straight country record and does a fine job by the way, no frills here, just a good decent country record with tip top playing by Milt and his string band.

...........................................................

Jimmy Dallas with String Band.
Sho-me Records # 539 - 1953
Side A - Flame Of Love.
Side B - My Heart Is Yours.

Once again Jimmy and his string band come out tops with a perfect country bop record. Mid paced bopper on the flip and the standard country weepie on the A side.
"My Heart Is Yours" is the stand out song and starts with some lovely Steel guitar and chugging rhythm before Jimmy lays down some mighty fine vocal. The solo brings you two rounds of scintillating steel, some piano and leads out again with that weeping steel. The Sho-me state record company does it again!

...........................................................

Jimmy Dallas with String Band - Sho-me Records # 5310 - 1953
Side A - Nervous Feeling
Side B - Crooked Cards

Jimmy Dallas does what he does best and records another swingin' mid tempo country bopper!
Along with his Westport recordings there is no doubt that Jimmy has a damn fine voice and always has a well versed country band to back him.
'Nervous Feeling' is all that you would expect from Jimmy, great musicianship, catchy melody and a real feel good tune from the showme state of Missouri.
The same goes for the flip 'Crooked Cards', again mid tempo classic country about not gambling your love with a deck of cards .......pure magic!
