Quality Records !

Quality Records (Canada)

Ernie Chaffin - Quality Records # 1659 - 1957
Side A - I'm Lonesome
Side B - Laughin' and Jokin'

Originally released on the legendary Sun records from Memphis in the same year and picked up for a release on the Canadian label Quality.
This is a rare find on a 78 by Quality (only listed as a release on Quality as a 45 rpm on Discogs) and in my opinion one of the greatest recordings made at Sun studios .......better than any Jerry Lee Lewis recording .......so is a mystery why Sam released 4 singles by Ernie but he never pushed him like he did with all the others.
Anyway, this is a quality record released on a Quality label. Pure country bop, original sound, original production and just brilliant IMO.

Harris Records !

Harris Records!

Danny Brown and the Circle "O" Ranchboys
Side A - Party Girl.
Side B - You're Gonna Be Fooled.
Mt. Pleasant, Texas.

A mighty fine record by Danny Brown and his Circle "O" Ranchboys out of Mount Pleasant, Texas (date unknown) but sounds around 52/53.
Both songs bounce along at a fine mid tempo pace, classic country Hillbilly, piano, guitar, steel guitar and fiddle provide all the usual and mostly expected sounds and all played to a very high level.

Academy Records !

Orville 'Rusty' Newby and his Saddle Serenaders
Academy Record # WS 100 - July 1950 - Fresno, CA
Side A - Ghost-Town Boogie.
Side B - I Can't See The Sun For The Tears.

This ghostly horror hillbilly lament was recorded in Fresno, CA in 1950 and by jingo it's a horror smash. Ghost-Town Boogie is just incredible, a haunting ghostly steel weeps along with scary lead guitar and vocals that would scare a tumblweed back up a tree. Additional vocals by Ray Cook . Killer Hillbilly Diller!!!!!

Orville 'Rusty' Newby and his Saddle Serenaders
Academy Record # 100 - 1950 - Fresno, CA.
Side A - I Can't See The Sun For The Tears.
Side B - I'll Understand My Dear.

Here is another Academy record by Orville with the exact same label number # 100! (No WS Prefix) But I just cannot be sure which version was released first! Both these records have the same song listed on both versions! 'I Can't See The Sun For The Tears' on the A Side here but on the B side of the 'Ghost Town Boogie' release!

To be honest! the A Side here is a pretty bang average country tune! nothing special! so leads me to think they loved the song and when 'Ghost Town Boogie' was recorded they knew that was the better song and re-released the same version of 'I Can't See The Sun For Tears' on the B side!

Sho-Me Records!

Jimmy Dallas with String Band - Sho-me Records # 5310 - 1953
Side A - Nervous Feeling
Side B - Crooked Cards

Jimmy Dallas does what he does best and records another swingin' mid tempo country bopper!
Along with his Westport recordings there is no doubt that Jimmy has a damn fine voice and always has a well versed country band to back him.
'Nervous Feeling' is all that you would expect from Jimmy, great musicianship, catchy melody and a real feel good tune from the showme state of Missouri.
The same goes for the flip 'Crooked Cards', again mid tempo classic country about not gambling your love with a deck of cards .......pure magic!

Jamboree Records! SCP

Jamboree Records # 590 (Starday Custom) - April 1957
Curly (Ray) Sanders
Side A - Why Did You Leave Me
Side B - Brand New Rock and Roll

This would appear to be a rare Starday custom press on a 78 record, you can find them on a 45 rpm (still very rare on 45 and sell between $400 - $600) and on you tube but the 78 version seems to be a bit of a rarity!
The A side is a nice bluesy, pop record with some nice guitar but it's the flip written by Curly that will have you reaching for your peg pants and comb for that all important 'Duck Tail'.
A simple song that is obviously trying to catch on to the new teen Rock 'n' Roll fan and hits all the marks with mentions of Peg pants, Duck tail hair, Cats and Bobbysox so don't be square man!!!
This records starts with a stop start vocal and then proceeds to get hotter & hotter and when the lead guitar gets going this mother cooks, Curly woops and screams and seems to be having a real good time.

Fayette Records !

Fayette Records # 1002 - 1955
Dave Brockman
Side A - How About It
Side B - All The Pain In My Heart

This little treasure was recorded in 1955 in Lexington, Kentucky. Dave went onto record the red hot Starday Custom recording (Feel Sorry For Me). Whereas this corker  hints more towards country with just a hint of rockabilly and western swing.
This is a great record and just swings right the way through to the Trumpet in the middle/end (yes Trumpet!!!!), but you also get some nice weeping steel, fiddle and strong lead guitar and all goes to make one swingin' little record.
Mr Brockman's Starday 45 may be the big hitter but this is still a mighty fine record and carries a punch!

Gabriel Records !

Gabriel Records.

Gabriel Records # 101 - Date Unknown.
Gulfport, Mississippi.
"HAPPY PAPPY" Powell Shaw.
Side A - Thankfull.
Side B - What's My Verdict.

Rose of Okla - Accordian
Jack Youngblood - Violin
Ace Dening - Steel.

Rev Jack Charles Jessup and his band

Two fabulous country gospel sides can be found here on the Gabriel label in Gulfport, Mississippi I would imagine from around 52/53. Sacred songs never sounded so great with the rich tones of singer Powell Shaw and his little band. The whole thing is sublime and has a very pure and pleasant sound. Great voice, Steel, Accordian and fiddle makes this a very nice record for any sacred country collector.

Label owner Rev J. Charles Jessup was a fraudster, thief, bigamist, musician, cock fighter and an all round bad egg by all accounts. Indicted for mail fraud in 1963 and convicted in 1968 the Rev Jessup owned record labels and preached on border radio shows through the 1940's, 50's and 60's in which he would entice poor southern folk to give him their money and be saved by Jesus Christ! (the money never made it to Jesus but to the Revs own bank and nice cars, boats and real estate)
He was also responsible for the theft of song writing credits of Jimmy Donley who just a few years later committed suicide in 1963 after seeing various songs he had written but credited to Jessup being hits for Jerry Lee Lewis & Fats Domino.

The whole startling article by Jim Linderman can be found in the link below.

White Church Records !

Lois Irwin ( The Singing Songwriter )
White Church Records # 5200 - 1954
Side A - Somebody Heard My Prayer
Side B - Let Me Be Worthy

Fiesta Publishing, LA, Hollywood, CA.

Now this is a real purty slice of gospel country bop! Both sides written by Lois and the A side is a right cracker that bops along just fine with some great snappy rhythm guitar, red hot fiddle and Steel .
Lois has a lovely voice and sings with confidence throughout. A wonderful 78 record!

Abbey Records !

Bud Messner & his Skyline Boys (vocals by Bill Franklin)
Abbey Records # 15004 - 1950
Side A - Slippin' Around With Jole Blon.
Side B - I Died All Over You.

Bill Franklin handles both sides with his smooth and rich vocals backed up by Bud Messner and the boys. Jole Blon the much maligned and sung about lady, here she gets another twist with a slippin' around tale with a heavy tip of the hat to Hank Williams with many of Hanks song titles mentioned in every line.
This record is cool, cool, cool and shows even in 1950 things were starting to hot up in the hillbilly western world!

1950 unknown – Bud Messner And His Sky Line Boys (Bill Franklin [vcl], Molly Darr [duet vcl*], Norman Earl Bud Messner [rh gt], Bill Bailey [mandolin], Jack Throckmorton [steel], Bobby berne [], Don Adams [] )
015 G-714 GEORGIA WALTZ* 15025
016 G 715 SLIPPIN' AROUND WITH JOLE BLON 15004
017 G 716 I DIED ALL OVER YOU 15004
